Starting January 8, Canadians visiting the United Kingdom for short trips will be required to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before boarding their flight.

What is an ETA?
The ETA is a new digital travel requirement for people who do not need a visa to enter the UK.
The ETA works similarly to the US version called ESTA, a document that pre-authorizes entry for travelers before their arrival.
Although some may refer to it as a visa, it is considered a visa exemption. It is only intended for stays of up to six months.
Canadians who already reside in the UK or have a visa are exempt from this requirement, including those who are permitted to live, work or study in the UK.

The Canadian federal government said travelers should use the passport indicated for their ETA application.
The cost of an ETA is a non-refundable fee of C$18 (£10), and travelers can apply through the official app listed on the UK government website or directly online. Requests are processed within three days, but may take longer.
ETAs are valid for two years and for multiple entries. Since applications are linked to passports, issuing a new passport means travelers will have to apply for a new ETA.
According to the government, obtaining an ETA does not guarantee entry to the UK. Travelers will still have to go through passport control and Border Force officials who have the final say over entry into the country.
Canada is among the more than 50 countries that can apply for the travel document. The UK government has listed more than 30 additional countries that can apply for an ETA from March 5.
Similar systems, such as the European Union’s ETIAS, will be launched this year.
