A summary of that defense announcement
My colleague Murray Brewster, who is CBC’s main defense reporter, shared his thoughts about Carney’s military announcement.
“What we saw today was a repetition of many of the things that the government is already doing,” he said.
This is the new: update the mandate of the Coast Guard; investing in large pinks for the navy; and the use of Canadian steel in a large defense production. But, as Brewster points out, we are still waiting for a complete plan of the liberals.
A moment of eyebrow collection was Carney’s statement that Canada would be associated with allies in the next generation of combat planes, including the American company Lockheed Martin.
“The fact that liberals do not propose a review of that particular contract is very interesting, and all the notion of being able to avoid buying American military products is questioned,” Brewster said.
“It is something that we are going to have to wait in the liberal defense policy, about whether the diversification of our military purchases are taken seriously.”
