Pailievre still promising CBC Defund
Pierre Poilievre, speaking from Montreal on the 24th of the electoral campaign, says that it does not have a time frame for when the CBC would disburse. Pailievre added that he would continue to finance Radio-Canada for the Francophone community.
I am Cat Tunney, following conservatives this week. One of Pailievre’s fundamental policies that lead to the elections has been GUT CBC, the public broadcaster in English. It is a promise that often causes cheers of their followers in the demonstrations and among the conservatives every time they meet in the conventions.
However, in a campaign dominated by renewed Canadian patriotism, the rimbombante leader seemed to have removed the foot of the policy pedal, rarely mentioning CBC in his stump speeches.
During this morning’s announcement in a conference room in Montreal Hotel, a journalist asked Pailievre a simple question of himself or not: does the CBC parade within 100 days of forming the government?
The short answer: yes, a Pailievre government would pay the CBC (although it did not commit to a timeline). In the same breath, he suggested that he sees a way for the CBC to survive, but without government funds.
“We are going to discourage the CBC and allow Canadians to enjoy it as a non -profit and self -financed organization,” said Poilievre.
And a small note: CBC has been presented at all press conferences that it has had this week, but has been excluded from asking one of the four limited questions.
