The Troops of the California National Guard were deployed in the streets of Los Angeles on Sunday to help quell a third day of protests on the immigration application of President Donald Trump, a step that the State Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, called “illegal.”
Police were making more arrests after at least 10 on Sunday and 29 last night, Los Angeles police officers told a news conference.
The National Guard troops monitored federal government buildings, while the police and protesters faced separate demonstrations on federal immigration raids in Los Angeles.
The Los Angeles Police declared that several demonstrations are “illegal assemblies”, accusing some protesters of launching concrete projectiles, bottles and other articles in the police.
The video images showed several autonomous cars of Alphabet’s Waymo caught fire on a center on the center on Sunday night.
Los Angeles police officers on horseback tried to control the crowds. The protesters shouted “What a shame!” In the police, and some seemed to launch objects, video images were displayed. A group blocked the 101 highway, an important road from the center.
Groups of protesters, many that carry Mexican flags and signs that denounce the American immigration authorities, gathered in places in the city.
The Los Angeles Branch of the Party for Socialism and Liberation organized speakers outside the City Council for an afternoon rally.
The governor of California, Gavin Newsom, said he asked the Trump administration to withdraw his order to deploy 2,000 National Guard troops in Los Angeles County, describing it as “illegal.”
In an interview with MSNBCNewsom said he planned to demand the administration for the deployment, adding that Trump “has created the conditions” around the protests.
Newsom accused Trump of trying to manufacture a crisis and violate California’s state sovereignty. “These are the acts of a dictator, not a president,” he wrote in an X publication.
However, police chief Jim McDonnell told a media conference on Sunday night that the protests were getting out of control.
When asked if the National Guard was necessary, McDonnell said the police would not “go to about it,” but added: “Looking at violence tonight, I think we have to make a reevaluation.”
In a publication on social networks, Trump asked McDonnell to do so.
“It should, right now !!!” Trump added. “Don’t let these thugs get yours. Make the United States great again!”
The White House disputed the Newsom characterization, saying in a statement: “Everyone saw chaos, violence and illegality.”
Previously, around a dozen members of the National Guard, together with the staff of the National Security Department, delayed a group of protesters outside a federal building in downtown Los Angeles, showed a video.
The US command. UU said that 300 members of the California National Guard had been deployed in three places in the Los Angeles area. His mission was limited to protecting staff and federal property.
In a publication on social networks on Sunday, Trump described the protesters “violent and insurrectionists” and said he was ordering his cabinet officers “to take all those necessary measures” to stop what he called “disturbances.”
Speaking to journalists in New Jersey, he threatened violence against protesters who spit the Police or the National Guard troops, saying: “Skip, we hit.” He did not quote specific incidents.
“If we see danger to our country and for our citizens, it will be very, very strong in terms of law and order,” Trump said.
The FBI offered a $ 50,000 reward for information about a suspect accused of throwing rocks to police vehicles in Paramount, hurting a federal officer.
Despite Trump’s rhetoric on demonstrations, he has not invoked the insurrection law, an 1807 law that allows a president to display the United States army to suppress events such as civil disorder.
When asked on Sunday if he was considering doing it, he said: “It depends on whether there is an insurrection or not.”
‘Maximum alert’
The Secretary of Defense, Pete Heghseth, warned that the Pentagon was prepared to mobilize active service troops “if violence continues” in Los Angeles, saying that the Marines in the nearby Camp Pendleton were on “high alert.”
The Northern US command. Uu said that about 500 Marines were prepared to deploy if ordered.
The mayor of Los Angeles, Karen Bass, blamed the Trump administration for inciting tension by sending the National Guard, but also condemned the protesters who became violent.
“I don’t want people to fall into chaos that I think the administration is creating completely unnecessarily,” Bass told a press conference.
Vanessa Crdenas, director of the Immigration Defense Group, America’s Voice, accused the Trump administration of “overcoming an excuse to abuse power, and deliberately fueling and forcing confrontations around immigration.”
On Sunday, the Secretary of National Security, Kristi Noem, said CBS” Face the Nation ‘that the National Guard would provide security around buildings to people who are dedicated to the peaceful protest and the application of the law.
Trump has pledged to deport a record number of people in the country illegally and block the border between the United States and Mexico, establishing the goal of stopping at least 3,000 migrants per day.
Census data suggests that a significant part of the population in Los Angeles, administered by Democrat, is Hispanic and born abroad.
But the measures of application of the law have also included legal residents, some with permanent residence, stimulating legal challenges.
On Sunday, Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum criticized the United States government for immigration raids and the deployment of the National Guard.
“We do not agree with this way of addressing the immigration problem,” said Sheinbaum, who has tried to cultivate a positive relationship with Trump, in a public event.
“The phenomenon will not be addressed with raids or violence. It will be sitting and working in a comprehensive reform.”
Trump’s justification
Trump’s justification for the deployment of the National Guard cited a provision of title 10 of the United States Code in the Armed Forces.
However, Title 10 also says that “orders for these purposes will be issued through the governors of the states.”
It was not clear immediately if the president had the legal authority to deploy the National Guard without the Newsom Order.
Title 10 allows the deployment of the National Guard by the Federal Government if there is “a rebellion or danger of a rebellion against the authority of the United States government.”
These troops can only participate in limited activities and cannot undertake ordinary law activities.
The Trump memorandum says that the troops “will temporarily protect ice and other personnel from the United States government that perform federal functions, including the application of the federal law, and to protect federal properties, in places where protests against these functions are occurring or probably occur.”
