The mayor of Conception Bay South says that a main water break has caused a local state of emergency, and expects the city’s water tanks to dry on Tuesday night.
“The situation is serious for water in Conception Bay South. We know that even with the emergency conservation order and an order to close businesses, an emergency state, which in the next two or three hours will not have water in the Concepción Bay South,” Darrin Bent told journalists.
The state of emergency was declared before 2:30 PM NT on Tuesday. On a publication on its website, the city ordered all companies that close immediately to conserve water, citing water supply concerns in Bay Bulls Big Pond.
The city has also placed residents under a mandatory order for water conservation, which requires that they only use water to emergency needs.
It is the second time that the city has been under an emergency state in just under a month.
“We have just overcome the forest fire fright, and now having to not use our water and consider, I suppose, to relocate it, it is a bit too much. So I hope that things are quickly straightened,” said resident Scott Randell.
Bent said they noticed the break around 12:30 pm between three arm arms and three island ponds, which feeds the water tanks in Conception Bay South and supplies about 30,000 residents.
The city is still discovering how to help people access the water meanwhile, since they are not sure how much the problem will last.
The second largest community in Newfoundland and Labrador is under an emergency. Conception Bay South is expected to stay without water on Tuesday. As Heather Gillis of CBC reports, the main water line of St. John’s broke early Tuesday afternoon.
Leonard Hickey, owner of Hickey’s Greenhouse, told CBC Radio’s Very active He puts his business in a challenging position.
“They took us by surprise, of course, I suppose they were all. And fortunately on a hot day like this, I want to say that we started to wate for early,” he said.
“The concern is how long the closure will last, because we have a great inventory of plants in our patio. And we have a very high risk if we do not have water … we only have a couple of days when we can spend without water, or we will start losing things.”
Officials of the city of St. John’s, who operate the Regional Water Authority, told CBC News that the problem is isolated to Conception Bay South, and that they do not know when it will be repaired.
The communications officer of the city of St. John, Brandon Mullins, said the regional water and city authority are working to address the problem together with the city of Conception Bay South.
“We need people to keep as much as they can. It will make water last longer. How much more?
Bent said he is not sure if the problem will be solved on Tuesday night or even Wednesday. Even if the problem is solved, he said, filling the tanks and recharging the water system will take considerable time.
Later, Bent told CBC Radio that it would be surprised if the city had water in the morning.
He said the city will continue to update residents, especially because Wednesday is the first day of school for students.
“There will probably be early updates tomorrow morning. We will be in contact with the School Board, and the School Board will make its decision based on what we tell them,” he said.
The elementary school of Gullies of Upper Gullies will be closed on Wednesday, according to a Facebook publication by the Councilor for Conception Bay South Town, Melissa Hardy.
The Department of Firefighters of Conception Bay South has reserved emergency water, he added, and the Firefighters in Torbay, St. John’s and Holyrood are ready in case of fire.
