A district and sessions court in Islamabad on Thursday granted bail to Bushra Bibi, wife of PTI founder Imran Khan, in cases related to the violent protest organized by the party last month.
On November 13, Imran made a “final call” for nationwide protests on November 24, demanding the restoration of the PTI’s electoral mandate, the release of detained party members, and the revocation of the 26th Amendment which, according to him, , had strengthened a “dictatorial regime.” ”.
A day of pitched battles between security forces and PTI protesters across the federal capital ended with a hasty withdrawal of the party’s top leaders and supporters from the Red Zone in the early hours of November 27.
At least six lives were lost in the three days of protests, including a police officer and three Rangers officers who were hit by a speeding vehicle, officials and hospital sources said. Claims and counterclaims over deaths allegedly caused by police action against PTI protesters remain a major bone of contention between the government and the opposition party.
On December 2, an Anti-Terrorism Court in Islamabad issued non-bailable arrest warrants against Imran, Bushra, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur and 93 others in a case related to the protests.
On December 13, a journalist associated with a foreign media outlet got a case registered against Gandapur and Bushra and other party leaders.
A week later, PTI leaders including Imran, Bushra and Gandapur were charged with murder after a Rangers official succumbed to injury sustained during the violent protest organized by the party last month.
On Thursday, district and sessions court judge Shabbir Bhatti heard interim bail applications filed by Bushra in the November 26 protest cases.
He was granted interim bail till January 13 by way of sureties of Rs 50,000.
Bushra appeared in the courtroom along with his lawyers. One case against her was registered at Tarnol police station, while three cases were registered at Ramna police station.
