Nueva Delhi: The family of a 68 -year -old dead brain woman donated her organs, giving a new life opportunity to three critical patients. The woman suffered from cerebral edema, a condition that causes swelling in the brain. Veena Jain, who was admitted to Max Super Specialty HospitalSaket, on March 15, underwent emergency surgery, but her condition worsened, and doctors declared her brain dead on March 26, according to a hospital statement.
Dr. Puneet Agawal, principal director of neurology at Max Hospital, described Jain’s medical condition upon arrival.
“It was brought with an altered level of consciousness, weakness of the right side and multiple episodes of vomiting. The images of the brain revealed a broken aneurysm, which led to intracranial hemorrhages. Despite surgery, their brain stopped working. After discussions, the family made the decision without single to donate their organs, contributing hope to others,” he said.
After the consent of their family, doctors successfully recovered their liver and both kidneys for transplantation. One of his kidneys was transplanted to a 60 -year -old patient with chronic kidney disease who had been in the transplant waiting list since February 2023. His liver was transplanted to a 68 -year -old patient who suffered from hepatic disease in the terminal stage he had been waiting for since September hospital.
Leading the transplant procedures at the Max Hospital, Dr. Subhash Gupta, president of Liver transplant and the bile sciences highlighted the importance of donation. “The decision of a family to donate the organs of his loved one with brain death is an extraordinary act of compassion. This was a unique case in which we used ECMO to stabilize the clinical parameters and confirm the death of the brain trunk, ensuring a precise diagnosis,” he said. The doctors also emphasized the urgent need for consciousness of organ donation, saying that this act has provided a new life opportunity to two families. They stressed that the timely recovery of donor organs with brain death is crucial and requested greater awareness about their importance.
