Boy who went viral for saying his friend shielded him has bullet fragment in neck

The doctors discovered a bullet fragment on the neck of a 10 -year -old boy who went viral for telling how his friend jumped on him to protect him during a massive shooting in the Catholic Church Annunciation in Minneapolis who killed two children and wounded others.

Weston Halsne, a fifth grade student at the Annunciation Catholic School, attended Mass on Wednesday when the shooting occurred. He said running under a bank and covering his head while the shots crossed the windows of stained glass, and said his friend Victor was shot while protected.

“I think I have a gunpowder on my neck,” he said after the shooting.

But the doctors then discovered that it was not only the gunpowder that hit the 10 -year -old boy’s neck, but also a bullet fragment.

Weston’s father, Grant Halsne, told NBC News that the fragment was close, but did not hit the carotid artery of the 10 -year -old boy, which a doctor described as a “miracle.”

“Yeah [the bullet fragment] I went further, I would have died, ”said Grant Halsne.

The HALSNE family is waiting to confirm when surgery will be programmed to eliminate the fragment, but I hope it is at some point earlier next week. The fragment is in a very sensitive area, but Weston is expected to recover completely, his father said.

Grant Halsne said the shooting has left his frightened son and not wanting to be alone.

“He is afraid of strong noises,” said the father. “The child to his left was killed.”

On Wednesday, just before 8:30 am, Robin Westman, 23, fired a rifle through the side windows of the Church of the Annunciation Catholic School, pointing to children sitting in the banks.

Weston recalled having thought: “What is that?” When he heard the first shot. When he listened again, he ran under the bank.

The student had practiced what to do during an active shooter situation, but never in the church, he said.

“He was about two stained glass seats,” Weston said. “So, they were like, the shots were like just by my side.”

Westman was found dead in the back of the church with an apparent self -inflicted bullet wound, according to search orders. It was found dressed in “tactical” black equipment and officials found approximately 120 caps of three different weapons that she used, according to the Minneapolis police chief Brian O’Hara.

Research on the shooting is ongoing.
