An eight -year -old boy died after being hit by a lost bullet while he was in bed at home in an apartment building in North York, according to the police.
The officers responded to shooting reports near Martha Eaton Way and Trethewey Drive around 12:30 am, Toronto police said in an X position.
When they arrived, they found a child who had been shot.
“I was at home, the safest place you can be, with your family, in bed, when it was beaten by a lost bullet,” said Det.-SGT. Jason Davis with the Toronto police service.
The child was taken to the hospital where he was declared dead.
“What happened here is an act of cowardly and disgusting violence,” Davis said.
“All resources available in the city are being assigned to this at this time.”
Two other units of hitting apartments
Two other apartments units were hit by shots, but there were no more victims, Davis said
There are no suspects or vehicle descriptions at this time, he said.
“We are working very hard to find those responsible people and hold them responsible,” he said.
A group of people was standing in a recreation courtyard near the building at the time of the shooting, said Davis.
He said the police are looking to talk to people in that group, if they have not yet done so.
“Every little matters, whether it believes that it is useful or not,” he said.
Any person with information must communicate with the Toronto Police or leave an anonymous advice with Crime Stoppers.
Mayor Olivia Chow said she shares “in the anger and pain of this loss” in a statement published in X on Saturday.
“Armed violence must end in our city,” says the statement. “The reckless and violent acts of some damage the entire communities and leave the tragedy in its path.”
She said she has talked to Toronto Myron police chief Demkiw On the shooting, and the police will provide more updates as they are available.
