Conservation officers in British Columbia say they killed a black bear after he attacked a woman walking her dog in Whistler.
A statement published online by the BC Conservation Official Service says that the woman was walking her dog with a strap in the Kadenwood neighborhood around 8:30 pm PT on Monday when she was beaten on the floor and bite by the bear.
He says she was taken to the hospital by ambulance and suffered injuries that do not endanger life.
The conservation officers made a sweep of the area and located a black bear that coincided with the animal’s descriptions.
The service says that the bear was killed due to the risk he raised to the public.
Conservation officers say they continue to investigate what happened.
At the beginning of this spring, conservation officers warned British Colombians who were aware of their environment as the bears emerged from their winter hibernation.
According to the numbers collected by the service, a total of 303 black bears were killed last year, below 603 in 2023.
Between 500 and 600 bears are killed on average in BC, most of the years, with 632 in 2019 as the highest registered number.
Officers have previously said CBC News to kill Bears is a last resort, and it is only done when officers determine that an animal cannot be rehabilitated or relocated.
