WASHINGTON – President Joe Biden will deliver a farewell address to the country next Wednesday, the White House announced Friday.
His speech will be delivered from the Oval Office, a place normally reserved for momentous occasions and important news.
The White House did not release additional details about what the president would discuss.
Biden’s speech will come less than a week before his political rival, President-elect Donald Trump, is inaugurated.
NBC News previously reported that Biden planned to deliver two major speeches, including a farewell address, about his legacy before leaving the White House.
His farewell speech, according to sources familiar, is expected to reflect his time in various political positions and include a message to Americans about the future of the country.
During farewell addresses, presidents traditionally review their proudest accomplishments, wish the incoming administration luck, and reflect on the state of the country.
Trump gave his farewell speech four years earlier, although it was pre-recorded. During his speech, he said he extended “our best wishes” to the then-incoming Biden administration, saying the country would “pray for their success in keeping America safe and prosperous.”
Former President Barack Obama, during his 2017 speech, discussed the state of democracy, noting that “our democracy is threatened whenever we take it for granted.”
