Bangladesh police said Friday that they had presented a new criminal case against Sheikh Hasina’s prime minister about an alleged plot to overthrow the government that replaced it.
Hasina is currently exiled in the Indian neighbor, the greatest pattern and benefactor of her autocratic regime, after she was overthrown in a revolution led by students last August.
Numerous criminal accusations against her and the main loyal ones of her Awami League party have been issued, even about a repression of the security forces that killed hundreds of protesters during last year’s riots.
The last case focuses on a virtual meeting attended by almost 600 members of the Awami League in December, which according to the police had conspired to “fight the civil war in Bangladesh” with the aim of restoring Hasina to power.
“Many of them, both inside and outside the country, promised to continue their fight until their last breath,” said the documents of the case.
Police spokesman Jasim Uddin Khan said AFP These charges had initially appeared against Hasina and another 72, but that the number of defendants can increase as the investigation advanced.
“The number of participants in the virtual meeting was 577. We are investigating their roles, and if you are complicit in the conspiracy, they will be charged,” he said.
A report by the UN Office of Rights earlier this year declared that the Hasina government was responsible for the systematic attacks and murders of protesters, since it tried to maintain power last year.
Currently, Bangladesh is being led by an interim administration with the Nobel Peace Prize Muhammad Yunus, 84, to the helm.
His caregiver government has the task of implementing democratic reforms before the new elections scheduled in June 2026.
