Guwahati: Assam’s police arrested the spokesman of Congress Reetam Singh on Saturday for a social media post aimed at three BJP politicians, including a former state chief and two acting legislators.
Singh was arrested from his home in North Lakhimpur after a complaint filed by BJP Mlab Deka’s wife. The complaint arose from a position of March 13 in X in which Singh shared photos of people convicted in a case of violation and questioned whether the law also applies to the ministers of BJP and the MLA accused of similar crimes.
Police accused Singh under section 356 of BNS (2). It also faces positions under provisions of Law SC/ST of 1989.
Singh argued that his arrest without prior notice was equivalent to contempt to the court. “More police are here. Nobody says why they are taking me away. I am a lawyer. Where will I run? Why did such harassment and pressure on a court officer?” He wrote in a series of publications.
