Arcade Fire’s lead singers say their marriage is over, but they remain committed to the band.
Montreal indie rockers Win Butler and Régine Chassagne announced Thursday on social media that they had decided to split, but their “bond as creative soulmates will endure, as will Arcade Fire.”
Butler and Chassagne met at McGill University, while the band was forming, and the couple married in 2003.
Arcade Fire broke into the mainstream when The suburbs It won album of the year at the Grammy Awards in 2011.
Three years ago, music publication Pitchfork published a story in which four people accused Butler of inappropriate sexual interactions that included unwanted advances.
In a statement at the time, Butler acknowledged that he had sexual relations outside of his marriage with Chassagne, but denied any misconduct and said they were consensual encounters.
Earlier this year, the band released their seventh studio album. pink elephant and embarked on a tour.
In a statement Thursday, the band says the couple continues to “love, admire and support each other” while co-parenting their 12-year-old son.
