NEW DELHI: Amid controversy sparked by a little-known Hindu group claiming that a temple exists beneath Ajmer Sharif’s dargah, Prime Minister Modi on Thursday handed over the ‘chadar’ that would be offered at the dargah in his name for the Urs of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishticontinuing a tradition he has followed since assuming the top job in 2014.
Modi handed over the ceremonial ‘chadar’ to Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji presented the chadar to be offered in his name at the Ajmer Sharif Dargah at the Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti Urs. This gesture reflects his deep respect for India’s rich spiritual heritage and the enduring message of harmony and compassion,” Rijiju said in a post on X while sharing a photo of the chadar. The minister is expected to introduce the chadar on January 4.
Sharing Rijiju’s message, the Prime Minister conveyed his greetings to the Urs. “May this occasion bring happiness and peace to everyone’s life,” he said in X.
A Rajasthan court had recently accepted a petition filed by the Hindu Sena seeking a study to investigate the veracity of the claim that the dargah was built on the ruins of a Shiva temple that was destroyed by Muslim rulers. The petition prompted SC to issue a blanket stay on all lawsuits between temples and mosques pending in court.
