A doctor born in the United States says he received an email from federal immigration authorities who demanded that he leave the country immediately.
Lisa Anderson, a doctor from Cromwell, Connecticut, told NBC Connecticut on Wednesday that she recently received a letter from the National Security Department that said “it’s time for the United States to leave,” according to the local media.
Immigration authorities have been pressing non -citizens to leave their own will, or “self -sports”, since the number of deportations remains at levels similar to last year.
But Anderson, 58, was born in Pennsylvania and is an American citizen.
“Language seemed quite threatening for those who could apply,” he said.
A senior DHS official told NBC News that the department has been issuing notices to people who do not have a legal status to remain in the country.
“If a non -personal email, as an American citizen contact, was provided abroad, notices may have been sent to unwanted recipients,” officials said. “CBP is monitoring the communications and will address any case -by -case problem.”
“To be clear: if you are an alien, being in the United States is a privilege, not a right,” the officials added. “We are acting in the best interest in the country and enforcing the law accordingly.”
The email to Anderson arrives days after an immigration lawyer from Boston, who is also an American citizen, received the same DHS email, telling him to leave the country in seven days. The lawyer, Nicole Micheroni, told MSNBC that until Tuesday, federal officials had not followed since she received email.
Noting the Boston incident, Anderson said he “has nothing to do with immigration.”
Anderson has been taking his American passport on her at all times since she received email, and is looking for an immigration lawyer.
“I worry that there are many more people out there like me who probably also thought that this was spam, that he probably did not realize, ‘I have a problem,” he said.
