An owner of a nursery in Abbotsford, BC, is being accused of assaulting children under their care.
The alleged incidents, dating from 2022, involved children from two to six years, according to the Abbotsford Police Department.
Indu Takhar, 60, has been accused of six assault positions, police said.
It was arrested on Tuesday and was released from custody under several conditions ordered by the Court that include not going to any nursery and not having contact with any person under 16.
Takhar is appointed owner of a three -locations nursery chain, Smile ‘N’ Play Daycare, on the company’s website. According to the website, she is the mother of two children and an ‘experienced visionary’ who established the business in 2019.
CBC News does not identify the specific location linked to charges to avoid identifying the victims of alleged assault.
In an inspection report of Fraser Health Facilities in May 2020, which before the period of time related to assault positions, the inspector found that one of the locations of the SMILE ‘N’ Play nursery seemed ordered and Well maintained, “however, the violations were observed, including two related to care and supervision.
The inspector reported that the manager, Takhar, “directed the children to continue eating when they said they had ended up telling them that they could go to bed or that she would call her mother and dad.”
The inspector said the children would cry and take another bite of food.
The 2020 report also said that the children who would not rest were physically turned to face the wall. Takhar said “What is your problem today, go to sleep and shut up”, in what the inspector described as a stronger tone?
Takhar told the inspector that she tells this to the children who scares them “and thus listen.” The inspector described the guidance strategy as inappropriate and ordered Takhar to implement strategies that are appropriate for development for children.
Fraser Health said in a written statement that he has launched his own investigation of the Smile ‘N’ Play nursery and is actively monitoring the three locations to ensure that they comply with the regulations.
“As soon as we received a complaint about the nursery operator, we took immediate measures by implementing a health and safety plan in the three locations, which meant that this individual was not allowed to access these sites to safeguard children under Be careful, “said the health authority.
The Police Department said Thursday that he began investigating Takhar in October 2024 after receiving reports that children were supposedly assaulted by the owner-operator of a nursery in Abbotsford.
The main crime unit of the department is asking anyone with information related to the investigation communicated to the police.
