A Russian drone strike in northeastern Ukraine kills 9 people, officials say

A Russian drone hit a passenger bus in the northeast region of Ukraine in Sumy on Saturday, killing nine people and wounding another four, Ukrainian officials said. The attack occurred only a few hours after Moscow and kyiv conducted their first direct peace conversations in years that they failed to cease fire.

The National Police of Ukraine published photos showed by the sequelae of the strike in the city of Bilopillia de Sumy, about 6 miles from the front line and the border with Russia.

Associated Press could not independently verify the details of the incident. There were no comments from Moscow.

“This is another War Crime in Russia: a deliberate strike on civil transport that did not represent a threat,” said the Regional Administration of Sumy in a position in the Telegram messaging application.

Russian and Ukrainian officials met in Türkiye on Friday in an attempt to reach a high temporary fire, but the conversations ended after less than two hours without advance. It was the first face -to -face dialogue between the two parties from the first weeks of the Moscow Moscow large -scale invasion of Ukraine.

And although both parties agreed to a great exchange of prisoners, they clearly remained very separate in key conditions to end the fighting.

One of those conditions for Ukraine, backed by its western allies, is a high temporary fire as the first step towards a peaceful settlement. The Kremlin has pushed back against such truce, which is still difficult to achieve.

The Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, said he discussed the conversations with US President Donald Trump and the leaders of France, Germany, the United Kingdom and Poland. In an X post of a European leadership meeting in Albania, he urged “difficult sanctions” against Moscow if he rejects “a high full and unconditional fire and the end of the murders.”

In Istanbul, kyiv and Moscow they agreed to exchange 1,000 prisoners of war each, according to the heads of both delegations, in what would be their greatest exchange.

Both parties also discussed the fire and a meeting between their heads of state, according to the chief Ukrainian delegate, the Minister of Defense Rustem Uumev.

Medinsky, an assistant from President Vladimir Putin, said that both parties agreed to provide with each other detailed proposals of high fire, and Ukraine asked the heads of the state meeting, which Russia took under consideration.
