The parents of a 19 -year -old man found dead inside a Scarborough shopping center are staggering pain and they say they don’t know why someone would like to hurt their son.
In an interview with CBC Toronto on Friday, Judin Basilio and Mariyathasan Amalathas broke repeatedly, saying that Daniel Amalathas was a “regular, wonderful and adorable child” who took care of them, went to church and loved everyone.
“Someone killed my son,” Basil said.
Basil said I obtained “the beginning of an answer” from a detective on Friday in terms of what happened, but added that it has mainly stayed with questions.
“We don’t know why this is happening.”
Toronto police announced Friday that two children, both 17, had been accused of second degree murder in Daniel’s death. The couple, who cannot be appointed under the Youth Criminal Justice Law, was arrested Thursday and planned to appear before the court on Friday morning.
Just before August 2, the police responded to a call that someone had shot in the city center of Scarborough. They found a 19 -year -old boy in a family bath that suffered a gunshot wound. The man, later identified as Daniel Amalathas, was declared dead on the scene.
The shooting was the 27th Homicide of Toronto of 2025.
Daniel described as ‘friendly’ and ‘patient’
His parents said Daniel was a second -year automotive engineering student at the University of Ontario Technology and worked part -time in Costco in Ajax, ONT. He loved animals, was particularly fond of his dog, Shalom and loved cars.
“He is very friendly and very patient with us and … adorable. He always goes to church with us,” Basil said.
“He is a very busy guy, you know, working, at school and fixed the car. He goes to the gym. He finished swimming, skating. He is very active. He goes to church,” he said.

Basil said Daniel would sometimes leave her at work in winter, and because he was afraid of driving after work, he would pick it up again, saying: “Mom, do not drive if you don’t feel safe. I will help you.”
She added: “He is helping us a lot.”
With Daniel missing, Basil’s message and her husband to her son is: “I love you.”
Many neighbors have come to cry for the loss of Daniel, he added.
Now, the family is receiving support from neighbors, friends, family and shepherds of Malvern Christian Assembly.
“We have a strength to support it due to your support,” he said.
Any person with information is asked to communicate with the police.
