The Alberta Law Society will hold a hearing on Monday to sanction former Provincial Justice Minister Kaycee Madu.
Madu was declared guilty of misconduct last year when, as Minister of Justice in 2021, he called on Edmonton’s police after receiving a traffic fine.
Madu received the driving ticket distracted on March 10, 2021 by an Edmonton police officer. The officer said Madu had his cell phone in his hand while driving in a school zone.
Then, Madu called Edmonton’s police officer, Dale McFEE, to discuss the $ 300 ticket.
Madu told an audience last year that he did not call McFe on the ticket, but he was looking for peace of mind that he was not being racially outlined or illegally surveyed.
A panel of members of the Law Society determined that while Madu did not ask McFEE to do anything about the ticket, he tried to use his position of power to influence a personal problem.
In a hearing report published last October, the members of the Committee said that Madu is guilty of behavior worthy of sanction, although a punishment has not yet been determined.
The company, which regulates lawyers in the province, said that their actions were irresponsible and that it was Madu’s responsibility as a minister of justice to give an example to lawyers in the province.
Madu has been working as a lawyer in a private practice since he left the government and could face a suspended or disqualification license.
Madu was withdrawn from the Justice portfolio by then Prime Minister Jason Kenney after the news of the telephone call was made public in 2022. However, Kenney later would make Madu’s Minister of Labor, and Madu briefly served as Vice President Danielle Smith.
He lost his 2023 re-election offer in Edmonton-South West candidate, Nathan IP, and has been working in private practice since then.
McFEE ends his mandate as Edmonton Police Chief this month and is ready to start a new job as the main official of the Alberta government on February 24.
