John Rustad resigns as leader of B.C. Conservative Party, Trevor Halford takes on interim role

Postscript: Rustad delights journalists with animal stories

I’m back from the BC Legislature to wrap up the day and there’s a postscript to add to this story.

By mid-afternoon, the flurry of activity sparked by the morning news had calmed down. That’s when Rustad, taking a break from cleaning his office, walked into the press gallery and began regaling reporters with stories of animals he had found in northern British Columbia.

For about 20 minutes he told stories about otters, wolves, eagles and other animals.

Once, he said, while snowshoeing in the bush, he realized he was downwind of a full-grown moose. He coughed, alerting the moose to his presence and began charging, he said.

With only an ax to defend himself, Rustad said, he stood his ground. Just before reaching it, the moose stopped, snorted, and turned around.

“Politics is nothing compared to that,” he said.
