Ottawa MPs divided over decision
Ottawa lawmakers were asked about the Supreme Court’s decision to dismiss an appeal by Universal Ostrich, paving the way for the culling of hundreds of birds.
Our colleagues in Ottawa met some parliamentarians in the hallways today and were able to ask them their reaction to the Supreme Court’s decision.
“We’re obviously pleased to see the decision,” said Sean Fraser, Canada’s justice minister and attorney general.
“It is important that the Minister of Agriculture and the CFIA are able to protect the health of the Canadian public at large and the food we eat, as well as the poultry industry.”
Scott Anderson, the Conservative MP who represents ostrich farming and tabled an anti-culling petition in the House of Commons yesterday, said he is disappointed.
“This underscores the structural need for change at the CFIA,” he said. But he did not respond when reporters asked if he had asked the government to stop the slaughter.
