Lia-Monica Fontaine, 16, won a silver medal at the artistic gymnastics world championships on Friday in Jakarta, Indonesia.
The Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, Que., native finished second in the vault event with a score of 14.033 points.
Neutral athlete Angelina Melnikova won the gold medal with 14.466 points. American Joscelyn Roberson took bronze with a score of 13.983.
“Coming into these worlds, I knew I was pretty good on vault, so I was looking forward to getting to the finals, but I didn’t know it would be possible to get a medal,” Fontaine said of winning silver at her first world championships.
Fontaine becomes the second Canadian to win a medal in women’s jumping. Shallon Olsen earned a silver medal in 2018.
Friday’s performance was the continuation of a great season for Fontaine.
In just her first year competing at the senior level, Fontaine earned four individual medals at the 2025 Pan American Championships last June, including silver on all-around and vault, gold on floor exercise and bronze on uneven bars.
Also today, Canada’s Aidan Li, another world championship rookie, finished eighth in the men’s pommel horse final. Felix Dolci placed 16th in the men’s final earlier this week.
The World Cup concludes on Saturday with five more device finals.
Canadian Ellie Black, 30, qualified fourth for the women’s beam final in her ninth appearance at the world championships.
She took silver on beam at the 2022 world championships, where she also helped Canada to team bronze. Black also won silver at the 2017 World Cup in Montreal.
