RECAP | Progressive Conservatives will form majority government in N.L.

The perfect political storm pushes the majority of the PC

For Wakeham, a series of dominoes needed to fall, one by one, for his Progressive Conservatives to win this election.

A campaign of pocketbook and public safety promises (crime, health care, cost of living) that resonates at the polls.

All the votes are split in his favor, to achieve relatively narrow victories in selective elections in rural Newfoundland and Labrador, defying public opinion polls.

Keep high-profile Liberal rivals of PC incumbents at bay, especially in metropolitan suburbs, while taking away seats vacated by outgoing Liberal heavyweights.

Check, check, check.

The Conservatives reached the magic number of 21 seats for a majority, while gaining a popular vote margin of less than one point: 44.3 percent to 43.5 percent.

As for what comes next: Wakeham’s party, while attacking the MOU with Quebec, made many big-money promises during the campaign. The main ones include important health care and public safety plans. Voters will be watching what they do with this majority.
