“Reading the 13 books on the long list was a great pleasure; I was feeling the emotion, the joy I felt since I began to read books without photos in them 60 years ago,” Doyle wrote in a press release. “But when controlling the 13 to six, there was sadness, even the fault for losing books we love. But also satisfaction and gratitude: we had chosen six great novels.”
“I think the six have two great things in common. Their authors are in total the command of their own English store, their own rhythm, their own experience; each one has created a novel that no one else could have written.”
“And all the books, in six different and very fresh ways, find their stories in the examination of the individual who tries to live with, love, seek attention, to face, understand, keep at bay, tolerate, escape from other people. In other words, all are bright written and all are brilliantly human.”
