From next month, green card holders seek to become American citizens will take a new and longer version of the naturalization test.
The Civic Naturalization Test of 2025 will have more potential questions, from 100 to 128, and those examined will be asked 20 randomly selected questions instead of 10. To pass, 12 of them must answer correctly, instead of six, as in the old test.
Like the elder, it is still an oral evidence given by a US citizenship and immigration services officer. But unlike the previous test, once a person answers enough questions to approve or fail, the officer can stop asking questions.
The USCIS spokesman, Matthew Tragasser, said in a statement that the changes published in a federal registration notice this week will help to ensure that only immigrants “who meet all eligibility requirements, including the ability to read, write and speak English and understand the government and civic of the United States, can naturalize.”
There are other changes between the old and the new test: the 2025 test eliminates the questions about geography and focuses more on US history and governance.
