In a few weeks, the Federal Government will close a program that encourages owners to adapt their properties through energy efficiency improvements, such as better insulation, window replacement and purchase of a heat pump.
The owners of housing involved with the program received an email on Wednesday from the federal government that notified them that the loan of the most ecological homes in Canada would no longer receive requests after October 1, 2025.
For those who request before the deadline, they may not receive the loan since the funds for the program are being depleted.
In the message sent to the home owners, the program is described as “successful” and “the financing will soon be completely assigned.”
Since its launch in May 2021, the program has offered interest -free loans between $ 5,000 and $ 40,000, and required a prior evaluation and subsequent to retrofit.
“Cutting a program like this really interrupts companies, kills jobs in qualified trades, and really breaks the confidence of consumers that perhaps were based on this program,” said Brendan Haley, senior senior of the policy strategy with Efficiency of Canada, a thought of energy efficiency based in the sustainable energy research center of the University of Carleton.

“When the subsidy was canceled, the promise was that the loan was there,” said Haley. “Now, if the loan program disappears, there really is not a federal government solution for Canadians who have middle income and benefit from a loan to reduce their energy costs and reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.”
To date, more than 120,000 loans have been committed, for a total of $ 2.9 billion, said a spokesman for the Canadian mortgage and housing corporation in a statement sent by email.
The federal government will continue to offer the greenest housing program in Canada and the oil pump affordability program to heat.
Meanwhile, Ottawa has begun to introduce a replacement for the subsidies program, although it is currently only available in Manitoba and is generally limited to low -income households.
In federal elections earlier this year, the liberal platform included several references to offer modernization programs, including promises to facilitate that “it is easier for low and medium -sized homes, including tenants, adopting heat pumps and energy efficiency improvements”, and “allowing opportunities for large pollutants to support consumers in the reduction of their carbon footprint.”
A spokesman for the Minister of Housing and Infrastructure Gregor Robertson did not immediately respond to a request for comments.
