Firefighters gain ground on Long Lake wildfire

Firefighters fighting the Long Lake Wildfire are advancing in the perimeter, according to the New Scotland Natural Resources Department.

In an update of social networks on Sunday, the province says that the fire in Annapolis County remains out of control with 8,468 hectares.

However, the update says that the equipment has been able to establish barriers around the entire perimeter. That helped firefighters push in some cases up to 100 meters.

There is rain in the forecast for the area. Light rain is expected in the afternoon with greater quantities at night.

Forty firefighters of the Department of Natural Resources are on stage, together with 18 of Ontario, 40 Quebec and 60 of the local area.

The fire has destroyed 20 houses and approximately a dozen other structures since it began more than three weeks ago. There are no new damage reports.

On Wednesday, the residents of 360 houses that were evacuated could return, but 145 houses remain evacuated.

Another update is expected on Monday.
