A sub-Subered and a sergeant of the Gilgit-Baltistan explorers were martyred, while another soldier was injured when the terrorists opened fire at their control point along the Karakoram road (KKH) in the Diamer district on Friday morning, authorities said.
Gilgit-Baltistan explorers are a federal paramilitary force responsible for internal security in GB and protect their borders.
Senior Police Superintendent (SSP) Diamer Abdul Hameed said Dawn.com That the terrorists attacked the control point of GB Scouts located in the KKH near Chilas of the Diamer District on Friday at 12:15 am
“The unknown armed men shot at the control point from an elevated position of the hill, wounding three exploration personnel, two of whom succumbed to their wounds later,” he said. “A total of nine people were present at the control point when the attack took place.”
The deceased were identified as Naib Subedar Khush Dad and Havaldar Ashraf, while Lance Naik Sajid Ali suffered an abdominal injury and is under treatment, he said.
“The Police, led by the Deputy Inspector General and the District Police officer, responded immediately and visited the incident site in the next 15-20 minutes, traveling there from Chilas,” he said.
The injured moved immediately to the Regional Headquarters hospital (RHQ) in Chilas, added SSP Hameed.
Police recovered two grenades and 10 spent shells from the hill shot site, while 17 bullet holes were found at the control point. The terrorists managed to flee the area.
After the incident, the elite force and the additional police were sent to the area to strengthen the position and chase the attackers, the SSP said.
“The Police have begun to carry out raids to arrest the culprits and have attacked many areas,” said Hameed, added that so far no organization had claimed the responsibility of the attack.
The incident occurred in the same area when ten people lost their lives and 20 passengers received injuries when a bus bound for Islamabad was criticized near Chilas in Diamer in December 2023.
GB Interior Minister Shamsul Haq, Lone said in a statement that the terrorists attacked the KKH control point in the dark of the night.
“Immediately after the attack, a great contingent of security forces reached the place and sealed the area and expanded the search operation to chase the terrorists,” he said. “There was no previous intelligence regarding the attack.”
He said that the wounded soldier in the incident has been transferred to the hospital to receive medical treatment, and his condition is out of danger.
“The GB government would persecute terrorists and take them to their final destination,” said Lone, added that those who try to sabotage the peace of this peaceful region are enemies of the country and the nation.
The minister also said that the GB Scout control point had established on December 2, 2023, after an incident of dismissal in a passenger bus in which nine people died and 21 were injured.
GB government spokesman Faizullah Faraq said that Prime Minister Haji Gulbar Khan has taken a strict warning of the tragic incident and ordered the search for perpetrators.
The spokesman described the attack of an act of extreme cowardice.
On July 21 of this year, armed men martyrized a Federal Police soldier at a forest control point along the KKH in the GB District, according to the police.
