Some 200 children were stranded today after flood water involved a school building in the northern state of India Punjab.
The heavy rains extended through the Himalayas, killing at least 36 people in India in the last 24 hours and forcing the authorities to open important dams, which in turn caused flood alerts in three rivers in the neighbor Pakistan.
In the deadliest individual disaster, a landslide killed 33 people near the Hindu mountain of Vandu de Vaishno Devi on a pilgrim route in Jammu and Kashmir occupied by India on Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.
Three more people died when the waters of the floods exploded on the banks of the rivers in the district of Doda and low areas were flooded, the authorities added.
About 200 children were stranded on Wednesday after flood water involved a school building in the northern state of Punjab, local media said.
The vehicles fell from Madhopur’s flood on the Tawi River when parts of it collapsed after being whipped by heavy rains during the night until Wednesday morning, video images were shown. There were no immediate reports of victims.
Some roads that link the Jammu occupied by the Indians with the rest of India were also damaged.
The officials were fighting to restore the “almost non -existent” telecommunications services, said Omar Abdullah, Jammu Prime Minister and Kashmir occupied by the Indians.
“We had rain of 612 mm in [Indian-occupied] Jammu region from August 23 until today. This is 726pc above normal rain in the region during this time of year. It is the highest rain in the region since 1950, ”he told Mukhtar Ahmad, director of the India Meteorology Department in Srinagar Reuters.
There were forecasts for more rain and thunderstorms with winding winds in the mountainous Ladakh, and for a heavy rain for Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmira occupied by the Indians on Wednesday.
A little water had begun to go back on Wednesday, but many rivers were still at dangerous levels, authorities said.
“The immediate priority is the restoration of electricity, the water supply and mobile services, for which the authorities have been working continuously during the night,” said Jitendra Singh, Minister of Science and Technology of India, in a position on X.
Open dams
On the border, flood water wrapped parts of Kartarpur Sahib, a famous Siaj Temple in Punjab in Pakistan, said a rescue official Reuters under condition of anonymity.
Pakistan has also fought against the rains of the monsoon in recent weeks, with more than 167,000 people displaced in Punjab, including 40,000 who voluntarily left after flood warnings since August 14.
The official number of deaths of Pakistan’s floods since the beginning of the Monzón season at the end of June was 804 on Wednesday, half of them in August.
India opened the doors of the main dams in the back rivers occupied by India after heavy rains, said an Indian government source.
Pakistan said he had received a warning from India about the floods downstream, and issued his own alert for three rivers that flow to his territory. India routinely releases the water of its prey when they fill too much, with the excess that flows to Pakistan.
Today, the authorities said there had been a record increase in the levels of the Ravi, Chenab and Sutlej rivers in Pakistan.
Pakistan says that New Delhi had passed two previous flood warnings since Sunday.
