The Canadian privacy commissioner says that people have the right to eliminate information on the search engine, but Google refuses to meet.
The commissioner’s office says that Google will not implement a recommendation to eliminate specific articles in search results for the name of an individual.
The Federal Privacy Commissioner recommended Google De-List articles on a criminal office that later retired.
The individual says that articles caused direct damage, including social stigma, lost job opportunities and physical assault.
The case began in 2017, with Google challenging the application of the Federal Privacy Law to its search engine.
The privacy commissioner asked the courts to intervene. In 2023, the Federal Court of Appeals rejected the appeal of Google and the decision marked a victory for people looking for a “digital right to be forgotten” in Canada.
