Relief for Rahul Gandhi; Supreme Court stays defamation case for remarks on Amit Shah | India News

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Monday issued notice on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s plea seeking quashing of the case filed against him in Jharkhand.
The high court stayed the proceedings against Rahul for allegedly making a defamatory comment on Union Minister Amit Shah during the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.
A bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta sought responses from the Jharkhand government and the petitioner to the plea filed by Gandhi seeking quashing of the case.
A BJP functionary, Navin Jha, had filed the petition, alleging that Rahul had commented at a Congress meeting in Delhi that a murderer could become party president in the BJP, but that was not possible in the Congress. Jha alleged that Rahul had also made insulting comments against the BJP, which had damaged his image.
The court took cognizance of the matter and initiated proceedings, prompting Rahul to approach the HC, which prohibited coercive action against him until further orders. On February 16, HC finally dismissed Rahul’s petition seeking to quash the case.
