Engineer Muhammad Ali Mirza detained under MPO, also booked under blasphemy charges – Pakistan

Jhelum police said Tuesday that they have arrested the clergy engine Muhammad Ali Mirza for 30 days under the maintenance of the public order ordinance (MPO) for alleged controversial comments and then reserved it under the charges of blasphemy.

Mirza, a resident of the Mohallah machine in Jhelum City, often raises his conferences and speeches in his social media accounts and has accumulated 3.1 million followers on his YouTube channel.

Section 3 of the MPO Ordinance grants the authorities to arrest and arrest suspicious people to prevent “any person from acting in any way harmful to public safety” or to maintain public order.

A religious group had submitted a request yesterday, seen by Dawn.comrequesting legal actions against Mirza for the alleged controversial comments carried out during an interview that “became viral on social networks.”

Separately, a first information report (FIR) was recorded at the Police Station of the City of Jhelum on August 26 under section 295 C (use of derogatory comments, etc., with respect to the Holy Prophet) of the Pakistan Criminal Code and the Law on the Prevention of Electronic Crimes (2016).

Mirza “has severely injured the religious feelings of Muslims by making blasphemous comments,” said the FIR. The plaintiff said that legal measures against Mirza must be taken under section 295c of the blasphemy laws.

Mirza was also among 17 clergy whose speeches were prohibited by the then Jhelum DC during Muharram last year to prevent any possible sectarian violence.

The popular cleric survived an attempt to murder in a religious academy in March 2021. The suspect was arrested, and there was a case of murder attempt against him.

The cleric had also been reserved and arrested by the Jhelum police in May 2020 for derogatory comments against some religious figures. However, he was later released on bail.
