New York murdered police officer, Didarul Islam, one of the five people fatally fired at a high height of Midtown Manhattan last month, has given birth to a son, police announced Monday.
Arham became the third son of Didarul and Jamila Islam, and all are children, said New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch in a statement on Monday afternoon.
“Outside the tragedy, a new life has entered this world,” he said. “Arham joins his two older brothers, Ahyan and Azhaan. Together, they will carry out his father’s service and courage.”
Mayor Eric Adams said he was with members of the Islam family in the hospital when Jamila was at Sunday’s work.
“I know how special is Arham’s birth for this family that still dealt with anguish after losing his hero,” he said in X. “Our entire city is with them and is here to support them.”
The 36 -year -old Islam worked at the lobby of the 44 -story building in Park Avenue in New York City on July 28 when, according to the Police, Shane Tamura, 27, from Las Vegas, entered and immediately opened fire using a semi -automatic rifle.
Tisch later said that Islam was working in the building lobby with the permission of the department under a program that allows officers to provide security out of service but in uniform.
On Monday he noticed his formal title: first -degree detective Didarul Islam. Adams said in MSNBC last month that Islam was the first New York police officer born in Bangladesh to be killed in the fulfillment of duty.
After the attack, Adams said those who knew the officer said that “he believed in living the life of a pious person.”
Tamura also shot a security guard and two civilians in the building before firing fatally, authorities said.
Adams said that Tamura, who completed a trip through the country just before the attack, was trying to aim at the NFL headquarters, which has offices in the Park Avenue building, but entered the wrong set of elevator banks and never reached the offices of the League.
Two officials familiar with the matter told NBC News that the shooter, who played football in high school in southern California, left a note in the scene that said he wanted his brain studied by chronic traumatic encephalopathy or CTE.
The neurodegenerative disorder associated with head injuries can cause changes in behavior and cognition and has been diagnosed in hundreds of NFL players after their death. Tamura, who never reached the NFL, had a “documented mental health history,” Las Vegas police said.
Muhammad Mainul Islam, who identified himself as Ddorul Islam’s cousin, told NBC New York that the officer dedicated himself to providing his family and raising his children.
“When he had time, and especially his days off, he went to the mosque with his two children,” he said.
Islam was assigned to enclosure 47 at the Bronx.
Patrick Hendry, president of the benevolent association of the Police, said after the attack: “He left every day to keep his family, either in extra time or what he had to do.”
Tisch said in his statement on Monday that the newborn, his mother and his brothers are part of the New York Police fabric.
“Jamila, Ahyan, Azhaan and now, Arham will always be part of the NYPD family,” he said.
