Govt can consider pardon if Imran issues apology, PM’s coordinator says – Pakistan

Coordinator of the Prime Minister of Commerce and Industries Rana Ihsan Afzal has said that the Government could consider a forgiveness for the founder of PTI Imran Khan if he had an apology for his crimes.

Imran, imprisoned since August 2023, has been complying with a sentence in the Adiala prison in a corruption case of £ 190 million and also faces pending essays under the anti -terrorist law related to the protests of May 9, 2023.

In an interview in Dawnnewstv Showing ‘Doosra Rukh’ a day ago, AFZAL said that Imran’s sentence could be switched on if he issued a written apology to the president.

“If you write any request for mercy or an apology to the head of state, then, in my opinion, your prayer can definitely be forgiven,” said AFZAL.

“The scope available in the Law can be used. In addition to this, the Government has no other power to forgive its sentence,” he said, adding that as the accusations against Imran had been demonstrated, a pardon based on an apology could be considered.

He stressed that the sentence following the disturbances of May 9 did not mean that the “doors were closed” for dialogue.

“The most important thing in politics is that there is no enmity among political parties,” he said, emphasizing the importance of being able to sit and have conversations about the national agenda.

However, he claimed that Imran was responsible for the current atmosphere of political polarization that he described as a “deficiency in the current political space.”

“Other political parties may have conversations; they can sit and talk about national issues,” said AFZAL, adding that only the PTI refused to participate in the dialogue between parties.

Meanwhile, the general secretary of the PPP, Nayyar Bukhari, said that the government had the authority to end the judgment of Imran constitutionally.

“The State can bring cases and can also withdraw them. This authority falls to the state,” he said.

“The Head of State of Pakistan has the authority to grant forgiveness. This is in the Constitution, right?” Bukhari said, adding that the State had the power to withdraw a case against any person according to the Criminal Code.

However, he emphasized that this could only happen with dialogue, saying: “If this dialog does not happen, where will relief come from?”

Yesterday, Police staff arrested PTI’s protesters in Lahore and Karachi after party activists took to the streets officially start a national movement for the launch of the former usor, who has been in jail for two years.

However, the leadership of the party could not celebrate any important meeting in Rawalpindi and Islamabad as part of their campaign to ensure the release of Imran, since the police arrested dozens of party workers, including women, since they tried to celebrate demonstrations in various places in the capital.
