Canadians requesting a new or renewed Nexus card can no longer select a “X” gender marker in their applications, and instead they must choose “M” or “F”.
The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) confirmed the change in a statement on Tuesday, saying that it followed the executive order of the president of the United States, Donald Trump, in January that the United States will only recognize men or women in documents such as visas and passports.
The corresponding changes by customs and border protection of the United States (CBP) also changed the application process for Nexus cards, the CBSA said in an email to CBC News.
The change came into force in February, he said.
The Nexus program, jointly administered by CBSA and CBP, allows card holders to accelerate through customs and safety lines in airports and land crosses. While many use cross -border travel cards, some use them mainly for shorter waiting times while traveling inside Canada.
The CBSA says that there were more than 1.8 million members of the program in April 2024, “being most Canadian members.”
Transgender people in the United States say they are concerned about what will come after President Donald Trump signed an executive order that said his government only recognizes two sexes assigned at birth.
The agency says that Canadians who currently have a valid Nexus card with an “X” will still have the recognized document, but they will no longer be able to choose “X” when it is time to renew or replace their cards.
Trump’s executive order declared that federal agencies will only recognize “two sexes, men and women”, which “are not changing and are based on a fundamental and incontrovertible reality.”
The presidential order said that passports and other forms of identification issued by the Government must reflect the sex assigned to birth.
The US Consular Affairs Office website. UU., The agency that broadcasts passports, said “will only broadcast passports with a sexual marker ‘M’ or ‘F’ that coincides with the biological sex of the client at birth” and that the score “X” will no longer use for non -binary people, citing the Trump order.
Canada began recognizing the “X” score in passports for those who do not identify as men or women in 2019. Some 3,600 Canadians had the score in their passports from 2021, according to the federal government.
The CBSA says that Canadians with a “X” marker in their passport can continue to use it to request a Nexus card, despite the fact that this marker cannot be used on the card itself.
Canada data statistics show that there are more than 100,000 transgender or non -binary people throughout the country.
The Canadian government website warns people with gender neutral passports that “can face entry restrictions to some countries that do not recognize their gender.”
