More than 10,000 Air Canada flight attendees are ready for a possible strike in a week and a half after the members voted in favor of the strike, according to the union that represents the flight attendees.
The Air Canada de Cupe component said in a press release on Tuesday that after months of negotiation on a new contract, no agreement on key issues such as salaries, work rules and unpaid hours have been reached.
“The company would prefer to drag their feet to negotiate about the things that care about our members,” said the president of the division, Wesley Lesosky, in a press release. “Now, flight attendees have had the opportunity to weigh and tell the company that it is time to take the negotiation seriously.”
A strike vote indicates that the members are prepared to go on strike, but does not necessarily mean that a strike will occur. The union declared that a legal strike could begin as soon as on August 16 if an agreement is not reached.
Air Canada acknowledged the result of the strike vote in a statement, added that it remains committed to the negotiation process.
More to come.
