Railways to spend Rs12bn on track rehabilitation this fiscal – Pakistan

LAHORE: Pakistan Railways (PR) will spend RS12B on repair/maintenance and rehabilitation of tracks and other infrastructure projects, including signaling and communication systems, during the current fiscal year, while another RS10BN has been assigned for the repair/maintenance of the roller stock and other schemes.

On the other hand, the railroads have obtained a record income of more than RS7.48 billion in the first month (July) of the current fiscal year 2025-26. The income is RS1,46 billion more than the July of the last prosecutor, Sunrise has learned.

“During the last fiscal years, we carry out many repair works on the railway route in the Sukkur division: the most problematic area in terms of the railway railway.

Talking with Sunrise On Sunday, he said that despite the few financial resources, the PR has improved its passenger and cargo train operations and other sources of income. Under the Public Sector Development Program (PSDP) of the Federal Government for fiscal year 2025-26, RS22B has been given to the railroads. Of these, RS12bn would be spent only on the infrastructure -related projects, including the rehabilitation of the tracks and the repair of the signaling and communication systems.

Baloch said the PR had managed to reduce its dependence on the federal government massively, since the department was fulfilling most of its expenses with its own financial resources.

Speaking about the income of the railroads, the CEO said: “While the figure of July 2025-26 shows that the income earned this month were RS1,46 billion more than last year, at the end of the current fiscal year on June 30 of next year, the department will play a figure of RS100BN.”

It is pertinent to mention that in the last prosecutor who ended on June 30, the railroads had won RS93bn that included RS47Bn and RS31bn of passenger and cargo trains, respectively. RS1.5BN were obtained through the operation of military goods through the railroad, RS3bn of the operations of other coaches and RS9bn of other diverse resources.

In the year 2023-24, the PR had obtained income from RS88bn, RS15bn more than the objective. In 2018-19, the total admission of public relations touched the figure of RS45BN that increased to RS48.5bn in 2020-21 and RS63.5bn in 2022-23 fiscal years.

In 2024-25, the Railways Karachi division remained at the top of the revenues of passengers with RS15bn, followed by Lahore with more than RS11bn. In the cargo sector, the Karachi division exceeded with a record gain of RS28B, followed by the fine division that won RS1BN.

“Although we are already doing everything possible to improve our operations and income, our goal is to make our trains operations safer and more comfortable for passengers,” said Railways CEO.
