• The UN Conference ends with a global impulse for a solution of two states
• Malta also announces the intention of recognizing Palestine in September
Washington: France and 14 other Western nations asked countries around the world to recognize a Palestinian state, the main diplomat of France said Wednesday.
The Foreign Ministers from 15 countries on Tuesday night issued a joint statement after a conference in New York, co -presided by France and Saudi Arabia, aimed at reliving a solution of two states between the Israelis and the Palestinians.
“In New York, along with 14 other countries, France is issuing a collective appeal: we express our desire to recognize the state of Palestine and invite those who have not yet done so to join us,” wrote Jean-Noel Barot in X.
The three -day meeting, convened at the United Nations headquarters under resolution 79/81 of the UN General Assembly, ended with the adoption of a resolution that urges member states to take concrete measures, without further delay, to implement the UN mandates existing in Palestine and support the framework of two states.
Although it was not adopted as a formal resolution, the declaration, entitled The ‘Declaration of New York on the peaceful settlement of the Palestine issue’, is circulating to support the 193 UN Member States before the 80th session of the General Assembly in September, where a progress report on its implementation will be presented.
The United States and Israel boycotted the conference and strongly opposed the solution of two states.
The statement requires the establishment of a sovereign and sovereign Palestinian state together with Israel, based on the borders of 1967 and with Jerusalem east as its capital, accompanied by security guarantees for both parties.
“The war in Gaza must end now,” he says, condemning both October 7, 2023, Hamas attacks Israel and Israel’s military response, which has killed thousands of civilians and destroyed Gaza’s infrastructure.
The plan urges the immediate implementation of a high fire agreement in phases negotiated by Egypt, Qatar and the United States, to stop hostilities, ensure the release of hostages and guarantee the withdrawal of the Israeli forces of Gaza.
It proposes to gather Gaza and the West Bank under the Palestinian authority (PA). It would be required for Hamas to give up power and give his weapons. An administrative transition committee, backed by international partners, would be formed under the authority of the AP, supported by a stabilization mission led by the UN to protect civilians and administer security and governance transitions.
The statement received a broad support from the participants who presided over the conference working groups, including Pakistan, Brazil, Egypt, Japan, Ireland and the EU.
Commitments
Several countries made firm commitments during the conference. President Emmanuel Macron announced that France would formally recognize the state of Palestine in September, becoming the first important Western power to do so.
Malta also confirmed that he would recognize Palestine in the same session, and Prime Minister Robert Abela described the decision as a “concrete step” in support of Palestinian self -determination.
Brunei reiterated the support for the complete members of the UN of Palestine, calling for the recognition “reflection of the International Consensus for Justice and Sovereignty.”
Russia reaffirmed its position, and Foreign Vice Minister Sergey Vershinin said Palestine has had an embassy in Moscow since 1990.
Meanwhile, the UN Humanitarian Agency said Wednesday that the conditions to deliver help to Gaza were “far from being enough” to meet the immense needs of their “desperate and hungry people.”
