Now we know that world records can fall into the World Swimming Championship in Singapore.
French superstar Leon Marchand crushed the individual potpourri brand 200 meters from men during Wednesday’s semifinals at the WCH Arena, lowering the 1: 54 pill of Ryan Lochte American pills to 1: 52.69.
It was the first world record to fall in this meeting, and let us ask us how fast the four -time Olympic champion could go in Thursday’s final.
It was also thought that McIntosh summer of Canada could aim at a long -standing world record (and the $ 30,000 that comes with it) in the semifinal of 200 butterflies today. Instead, the autopilot turned on, navigating the victory in its heat to a relatively slow 2: 06.22, about four seconds of the Canadian record rhythm that established in the national trials in June. Look at the semi complete here.
McIntosh will compete for his third gold medal of the meeting in the 200 -Thursday at 7:02 am et, with live coverage in CBCSports.ca and CBC Gem.
As is the case with the three -time Olympic champion, the question for McIntosh is both about whether he can win the race as if he can decipher the world record in the process.
The brand, which is currently in the hands of Liu Zige of China at 2: 01.81, was established in some strange circumstances in 2009, since Liu took almost two seconds of the previous brand while using the infamous Speedo Lzr Racer, a supersuit that improved the performance that was already prohibited in the United States, and whose worldwide prohibition was established in effect three months after the breed of Liu.
That confluence of events means that Liu’s record has felt almost untouchable during the last 16 years; In fact, it is the worldwide home record for older women.
Look | McIntosh wins 400m Freestyle, opening for 5 golds with a victory:
The Canadian Olympic medalist Summer Mcintosh has added another world championship medal to his list of achievements, easily winning the freestyle of 400 meters. McIntosh points to five gold medals in individual events in Singapore worlds.
In June, however, McIntosh threatened Liu’s mark with the second fastest time of 2: 02.26. And then he said he had more to give.
“I think my last blow was a bit unstable, so I think I have at least one point one, only in that.
“The fact that I am knocking on the door in that world record is very, very encouraging because that is the world record where I never thought I would approach.”
Everything seemed to align for McIntosh, who established another three world records in the tests and is now following the feat of five individual gold medals achieved only by the American superstar Michael Phelps in 2007, to take two shots in another long -standing brand.
Instead, he left his first chance in the semifinals floating, an interesting contrast with his future training companion, who destroyed Lochte’s record minutes later.
“Upon entering tonight, I know I just needed to enter the final and use the least possible energy,” Mcintosh said. “I really didn’t try the first 100, and then I kicked just to put my head on the wall first.”
Heroux and CBC Sports Swimming Analyst, Brittany Maclean Campbell, had a fascinating conversation about the racial strategy of McIntosh in the last episode of The Ready Room, which you can see here:
Look | Summer McIntosh will be for the 200 m world of Fly Fly?:
On day 4, the French phenomenon Leon Marchand established a world record in its semifinal of the 200 flies of men, who had the presenter of the Brittany Maclean Campbell room wondering why Summer Mcintosh did not press for the same in the 200 semi of his wife semi of his women.
A key difference between McIntosh and Marchand: the latter eliminated his program in these worlds after what he called a difficult post-pooling year.
McIntosh, on the other hand, is chasing that Phelps mark with a loaded schedule, although still carefully selected. And it is possible that he is already looking towards the 800 -style Free Layout on Saturday against another great American in Katie Ledecky, which is probably his biggest challenge to climb the five -gold mountain.
The Canadian defeated Ledecky in the 400 freestyle to begin the worlds, but Ledecky responded with a warning shot in the 1,500 yesterday when he published an amazing division of 8: 09.95 in the 800 brand: once Mcintosh has only surpassed once in his career (although he did it easily in June at 8: 05.07).
The 800 is also a new career for McIntosh. He has not swam in Worlds or in the Olympic Games since 2021, when he was 11th and the final was lost in Tokyo. Everything may before that duel on Saturday morning (8:17 am et) be a mere preparation for the Canadian.
So what does that mean for the 200 butterflies?
Well, it’s hard to go less than 100 percent in a world championship final. But Mcintosh won the Olympic gold in the event last summer at 2: 03.03. He told the American Regan Smith as his main competitor in the semifinal, and the best best of Smith is 2: 03.84. Elizabeth Dekkers from Australia, who published the semifinal time faster, has a better personal brand of 2: 05.20.
Look | McIntosh wins 200m im in Worlds:
On the second day of the World Swimming Championships, Summer Mcintosh collected his second gold medal in Singapore, and his teammate Mary-Sophie Harvey joined her in the bronze winning podium. Brittany Maclean Campbell and Devin Heroux tell you everything you need to know about the pool in Singapore.
Everything means that Mcintosh probably does not have to threaten Liu’s record to win gold. On the other hand, it would still be greatly risky not to do everything possible for her third victory of the meeting, and when the 18 -year -old girl becomes everything, even the oldest record in sport can be broken.
In other record news, Canada picked up its fourth medal in the pool, and the fifth in general, taking the bronze in the 4×100 mixed relay. A team of Russian athletes won gold, while China took money. The Olympic champion lost us the final after fighting until the tenth best time in the heating.
The Kylie Masse Canadian team, Taylor Ruck, Josh Lando and Oliver Dawson, 17, ran at a national record of 3: 40.90 to gain a somewhat surprising appearance of podium, especially taking into account the absence of Asmontage Penny Penny Oleksiak.
The abundant butterfly leg of 49.64 seconds led the Canadians to the medal dispute, and the Ruck anchor freestyle (52.94) secured its place on the podium. Look at the full race here.
For Masse, he marked his 16th consecutive meeting with a medal and took it to a draw with Mcintosh, for the moment, for most world podiums by a Canadian with 10. On the side of the other round, the bronze marked the first of Dawson’s career.
On the deck
* Ilya Kharun of Canada came out quickly, but could not endure in the 200 butterflies of men, ending fourth. The American star Breakout, Luca Urlando, won the gold. Look at the full race here. Kharun, the two -time Olympic bronze medalist, will have one more opportunity to return home with some hardware when he faces lying in 100 butterfly (semifinals on Friday at 7:10 am et; end on Saturday at 7:40 am et).
* MASSE will return to the pool for the 50 -back final next to Ingrid Wilm on Thursday at 7:56 am et after the Canadian duo was classified with the fifth and sixth best moment, respectively, in the semifinals. Masse won gold in the 50s in the 2022 worlds and finished fourth a year later.
