The University of Columbia will pay $ 200 million to the federal government to restore most of the funds that the Trump administration reduced the accusations of violating the laws against discrimination.
“This agreement marks an important step forward after a period of sustained federal scrutiny and institutional uncertainty,” said the interim president of Claire Shipman University in a statement.
The Trump administration in March said it was canceling $ 400 million in subsidies to school, accusing it of “inaction against persistent harassment of Jewish students.”
Columbia then agreed a list of demands of the Trump administration, which some critics saw as a capitulation of the private university.
Columbia said in Wednesday’s statement that, under the agreement, “a large majority of federal subsidies that were completed or stopped in March 2025, will be restored and restored Columbia’s access to billions of dollars in current and future subsidies.”
“This includes the restitution of most subsidies previously completed by the National Health Institutes and the Department of Human Health and Services, the renewal of non -competitive subsidies, the release of expired payments on active and not finished subsidies and the restored eligibility of Columbia to request a new federal financing of research in the ordinary course,” said the university.
Columbia and other universities have been attacked by the Trump administration about students’ protests on the war in Gaza, that some Republicans have said they were antisemy.
“While Columbia does not admit having acted badly according to this resolution, the leaders of the institution have repeatedly recognized that students and the Jews Jews have experienced painful and unacceptable incidents, and that the reform was and is necessary,” said the university in Wednesday’s statement.
Columbia said the agreement will establish a “jointly selected independent monitor that will evaluate the implementation of the resolution.” He says that the agreement encodes the changes that you have made about security, discipline and inclusion.
The $ 200 million, called the University Agreement, will be paid to the Government for three years.
It will also pay $ 21 million to liquidate the investigations of the US Employment Opportunities Equality Commission, said the University.
The co -chants of the Board of Trustees of Columbia, David Greenwald and Jeh Johnson said in Wednesday’s statement that the agreement “confirms the changes that are already underway in Columbia to significantly address anti -Semitism on our campus and allows the university to continue to undertake its transformative and scholarship research.”
Student’s protests for the war in Gaza, which Israel launched after Hamas’ surprise terrorist attack on October 7, 2023, took place at the United States University Campus, even in Columbia.
President Donald Trump campaigned to attack those protests, and since he assumed the position of his administration, he tried to deport some students who participated in pro-palestinian demonstrations accusing them of sympathizing with Hamas.
Another important university of the Ivy League, Harvard University, rejected Trump’s demands and has sued the Trump administration for threats to reduce funds. That case is pending.
