The happiest day of their lives became a little more fabulous for a couple and their wedding party, who made an improvised appearance in the Halifax pride parade in a decided attempt to get to their place in time.
“I will never forget it while I live. And I know that my partner either. It’s a privilege,” said the bride Patricia Lespence Slaney to CBC News.
Lesopence Slaney had been committed to Robert Salsman just under two years and were preparing for his big day at the Lord Nelson hotel on Saturday afternoon.
But when it was time to take a limousine to Saint Mary’s Boat Club, they realized that they had a problem: South Park Street was closed for the parade and limousine could not stop at the hotel. The street was scheduled to be closed until 3 pm, at the same time as its wedding.
Lesopence said he was not going to let a small thing like the celebration of the greatest pride in the Atlantic of Canada stands on his way.
“And I said no, no, let’s go. We are just going to pick it up everything, take it with us. So everyone picked up.
She said that in the midst of the rage of planning the wedding, she and Salsman did not realize that it was happening the same day as the pride parade, a massive event that attracts thousands of people to the Halifax center every year.
When the bridal party entered the way into a mission to reach limousine, Les overrance Slaney said that spectators and people in the parade immediately began to show support.
“It was very exciting,” he said.
“It was the bomb I needed. It’s like having oxygen … This is how it felt, it was stimulating.”
Soon a police officer appeared and offered to help them reach the car.
“It was wonderful … everyone started cheering and laughing. I was hitting, raising their hands in the air and was incredible,” he said.
“It’s the best thing that could have happened to everyone. He put us in a different mood. It doesn’t matter, you know, there are so many little things and we are very lucky to do it. I am 67 years old, my partner is 68 years old and it is probably the best day of my life.”
