The 2025 forest fire season is already one of the worst record for Canada and there is a high risk that more fires will explode in August, federal officials said on Friday.
More than 5.5 million hectares of land have burned so far this year, more than twice the average of 10 years by mid -July.
That is still far behind the record season in 2023, when more than 6,000 fires burned more than 15 million hectares of land.
There were 561 burning fires until Friday, including 69 that were considered out of control.
The authorities said that the risk of fire generally increases during August and that they predict higher temperatures for most of the country next month.
“This is consistent with the projections of climate change, which show that the next five years will be warmer than (we) are accustomed,” said Sebastien Chouinard, director of Operations of the Canadian Meteorological Center.
August is also scheduled to bring rain levels below the meadows, BC and maritime.
Saskatchewan has already seen one of the worst seasons of fires in terms of burned area, and a record number of people has been forced to leave their homes in that province.
More than 530 Firefighters from Australia, New Zealand, Costa Rica, Mexico and the United States are in Canada to help.
