An earthquake of magnitude 6.7 hit East Indonesia, said the United States Geological Service (USGS), but a monitor said there was no threat of Tsunami.
The earthquake attacked at 12:49 pm western Indonesia (10:49 PM PKT) and its epicenter was at a depth of 66 kilometers, about 177 kilometers west of the city of Tual in the eastern province of Maluku, the USGS said.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was no threat of Tsunami, and the Indonesian geophysics agency said in a post of social networks that the earthquake “did not have the potential to cause a tsunami.”
There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.
The vast nation of the archipelago experiences frequent earthquakes due to its position in the “Fire Ring” of the Pacific, an arc of intense seismic activity where the tectonic plaques collide that extend from Japan to the Southeast Asia and through the Pacific Basin.
An earthquake of magnitude 6.2 that shook Sulawesi in January 2021 killed more than 100 people and left thousands of homeless.
In 2018, an earthquake of magnitude 7.5 and the posterior tsunami in Palu in Sulawesi killed more than 2,200 people.
And in 2004, an earthquake of magnitude-9.1 hit the province of Aceh, causing a tsunami and killing more than 170,000 people in Indonesia.
