An investigation of the Congress on the attempt to assassinate the president of the United States, Donald Trump, in a campaign demonstration a year ago he lamented “inexcusable” failures on Sunday in the operations and the response of the secret service and requested more serious disciplinary measures.
On July 13, 2024, a gunman triggered the Republican presidential candidate during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, grazing his ear.
A spectator was killed and two other people, in addition to Trump, were injured before a government sniper kill the armed man, Thomas Crooks, 20.
“What happened was inexcusable, and the consequences imposed for failures so far do not reflect the seriousness of the situation,” said the report published by the National Security Committee and government affairs of the United States Senate.
The dramatic incident energized Trump’s commitment to return to the White House, with his campaign using a photo of him bloody and pumping his fist while he hastened out of the stage to attract voters.
The report did not shed new light on the reason for the gunman, who is still a mystery, but accused the secret service of “a waterfall of preventable failures that almost cost President Trump for his life.”
“The United States Secret Service did not act on credible intelligence, it did not coordinate with the Local Police,” said the Republican President of the Committee, Rand Paul.
“Despite those failures, no one has been fired,” he added. “It was a complete breakdown of security at all levels: fed by bureaucratic indifference, the lack of clear protocols and a shocking negative to act on direct threats.
“We must hold people responsible and ensure that the reforms are fully implemented so that this never happens again.”
‘Errors were made’
The Secret Service cited communication, technical and human errors and these reforms were underway, even in the coordination between different agencies for the application of the law and the establishment of a division dedicated to aerial surveillance.
Six unidentified personnel members have been disciplined, according to the agency. The punishments vary from 10 to 42 days of suspension without pay, and the six were placed in restricted or non -operational positions.
Reflecting on the attempted murder earlier this week, Trump said that “mistakes were made,” but that he was satisfied with the investigation.
In an interview with his daughter -in -law in Fox News“My point of view with Lara Trump,” Trump said the sniper “was able to get him out of a long distance with a single shot. If he did not do that, you would have had an even worse situation.”
“It was unforgettable,” Trump said about the events.
“I didn’t know exactly what was happening. They hit me. There is no doubt about that. Fortunately, I quickly put on me. People were screaming.”
