Joint investigation is underway in Hemmingford, which., Near the border of the United States, after a collision that involved a driver who was arrested for driving with disabilities, and a second vehicle that the police said he had “illegal immigrants”, some of whom fled the scene on foot.
Sûreté du Québec (SQ) said that emergency responders were called around 4:15 am, for a collision on Route 202, near Jackson Road’s intersection, in Hemmingford, approximately 65 kilometers south of Montreal.
SQ spokesman Stéphane Tremblay said that after the impact, the vehicle that transported migrants turned around, wounding four people.
They were taken to the hospital to be treated by injuries that do not threaten life, while the remaining passengers fled the scene.
There have been contradictory reports on the number of people in the SUV, and the SQ initially said there were 10 migrants and then updating that number to 12.
At 10:30 am, the police were still looking for eight people designed to travel in the SUV.
The Royal Police mounted from Canada (RCMP) told Radio-Canadá that migrants entered Canada from the United States, but did not say when.
The SQ said the RCMP was called to help in the search using drones and a canine unit.
Tremblay then clarified that it was a joint investigation, with the SQ responsible for investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident, while the RCMP manages aspects related to migrants.
According to the SQ, the driver of the second vehicle, a 48 -year -old American, was arrested for driving with disabilities. A passenger traveling in that vehicle was not injured.
