Jahangir Tareen’s ‘PPP support’ sparks comeback rumours – Pakistan

LAHORE: According to the reports, the veteran politician and prominent businessman Jahangir Khan Tareen is looking at another political return, this time under the PPP flag.

Speculations have won traction after a video became viral online that shows Mr. Tareen sitting next to the president of PPPP South Punjab, Makhdoom Ahmad Mahmood.

Answering a question about his possible return to politics, Tareen commented that if he would resume politics, “he would be with the PPP.”

While there has not been a formal announcement of the affiliation of Mr. Tareen with PPP, the comment has fueled a large number of rumors.

The unconfirmed reports suggest that President Asif Zardari, co -chair of PPP, can meet with Mr. Tareen Wednesday to seal the agreement.

However, the senior leader of PPPP Khawaja Rizwan Alam has dismissed the reports.

He said that due to the parliamentary obligations of President Zardari, this month was not possible.

Tareen has been far from the political scene since his defeats in the general elections of last year of fine and Lodhran.

Political Maverick

Mr. Tareen’s political career began during the reign of former dictator Pervez Musharraf.

He started as a member of PML-Q, but joined PTI in 2012.

He was considered a close confidant of PTI Imran Khan leader. Tareen was disqualified before the 2018 elections, but it was essential to ensure that the PTI had enough numbers to form the federal government in 2018.

He brought independent candidates to PTI’s fold to achieve the simple majority required in the National Assembly.

Tareen received important positions in the PTI government, but then developed differences with PTI’s leadership and was marginalized.

He played a vital role in contributing the motion of non -confidence against then Prime Minister Khan.

Later, he and other PTI members who had defected from the party formed the IPP before the 2024 general elections. After losing the elections, Mr. Tareen left the policy.
