Paris-Carlos Alcaraz recovered from two sets down and saved three parts points to beat Jannik Sinner 4-6, 6-7 (4), 6-4, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (10-2) on Sunday and conserve his title of the France Open for the second consecutive year.
Alcaraz, who won his fifth Grand Slam tournament in so many finals, produced one of the biggest returns in the history of the clay court tournament.
It was the first time that Sinner had lost a Grand Slam final.
It was also the final of the longest France Open, 5 hours, 29 minutes, in the open era.
After 3 hours, 43 minutes, Sinner had its first game point. But with just over five hours since the game began, Alcaraz served for the title with 5-4 above.
The drama was not over yet.
Sinner did a remarkable recovery of another excellent Alcaraz Drop shot. To the same limit to which he could stretch, he slid the ball on the net, with the ball landing with the smoothness of an autumn leaf and out of the reach of Alcaraz to put the 15-40.
When Sinner won the game to put the 5-5, it was his turn to milked the applause and was two points of the victory in game 12, with Alcaraz in service and 15-30 and in deduce.
But Alcaraz gave an amazing setback through the court to put the 6-6 and force a tiebreaker, with the crowd crazy when the winner of the Alcaraz court did it 4-0.
Sinner could not find a return path and Alcaraz won the game with an excellent right -wing pass and then fell on his back to celebrate.
