Miami-the unfortunate Rockies of Colorado have finished their ignominious and record streak of 22 consecutive series losses, dating from last season.
A 3-2 nervous victory in Miami on Tuesday night, highlighted by Hunter Goodman’s third homer in two games, he gave Colorado two consecutive victories about the Marlins to make sure that the rockies left the city with their first victory in the series since he took two of three arizona games in Denver in mid-September.
“That was big for children, to get that first victory in the series,” said the interim manager of the rockies, Warren Schaeffer. “Who would have known that it wouldn’t come until June? But the moment is now. I am happy for them.”
Colorado, a worse of the Major Leagues 11-50, won consecutive games for the second time this year after beating Atlanta on April 30 and San Francisco the next day. They go to a sweep of the series against the Marlins on Wednesday.
Goodman described the recent form of “more encouraging rockies than discouraging.”
“We had some difficult games in the first part of the year, and being able to be in ball games and having the opportunity to win is always better than simply not being in it,” he said.
Goodman teammates did not seem surprised by their fundamental role in obtaining the first victory of the rockies season.
“He’s simply raking, and when he’s hot, he’s one of the best batters in the game,” said midfielder Brenton Doyle to Rockies.TV. “I hope I keep it awake. He is one of my good friends and that was incredible.”
The Rockies reliever, Seth Halvorsen, obtained his third rescue, but only after Heriberto Hernández led his launch of 1-1 to about 400 feet to the left center, where Doyle made a game that ended the game, caught on the wall.
“I’m not going to lie; out of the bat, I thought it was a home run,” said Schaeffer. “But it wasn’t, so everything is fine. It’s the best (Doyle) in the central garden.”
Excluding the series of a game, the rockies are the fourth team since the expansion of MLB in 1961 to be the 18 series before recording their first victory in the series in a season. The 1987 parents, the Montreal Exhibition of 1969 and the 1962 Washington senators won their first series of those seasons in their 19th series.
Before the rockies arrived in Miami, they had gone 3-28 on the road, the worst brand of the road at that season in more than a century, and they had not won consecutive road games since last September 5-6.
“It is good to get a couple of victories. It is good to get that first victory in the series,” said Schaeffer. “Now we just advance.”
