A suspect is in custody after a shooting at Baldwin Park, California, left a dead police officer and another hospitalized on Saturday night, said officials of the Baldwin Park Police Department and the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Office.
The officers responded to a shots call and a low individual shortly after 7 pm in the 4200 block of Filhurst Avenue, authorities said. The call indicated that someone was shooting with a rifle.
An unidentified adult man was found dead in the scene that officials call a “double murder.” The authorities believe they have recovered the weapon.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s department is taking the main front in the investigation, said Sheriff Robert Luna.
Luna said it is believed that an adult suspect is the person behind the officer’s shootings and the victim found in the scene. It is believed that he first shot at the officers and then hit the shots. The unidentified suspect was later transported to the hospital in stable condition, authorities said.
“Our officer was an incredible man,” said Robert López, head of the Baldwin Police, at a press conference on Sunday morning. The authorities said that the officer’s name would not yet be released, since they could not notify all family members at the time of the press conference.
López said the fallen officer was an avid snowboarder and fan of the Los Angeles Dodgers, traveling to different stadiums throughout the country to see the team play.
The other officer who responded to the scene was hospitalized and is in stable condition.
